I got a confusing, yet similar message via Twitter but later a more informative post made its way to the TWL forums.

Xfire was bought by new owners today. Most of the team that has built Xfire over the last six years is leaving. We enjoyed working for you for the last 127 releases and wish we could stay to create the next 127. Good bye, good luck, and game on. --- The Xfire Team

Seems Viacom, who owns MTV, sold Xfire to a competition comany called Titan. Wow. What's next for Xfire.

UPDATE:

It looks like Xfire has been acquired by Titan Gaming, a 2006 startup that has to this point focused on helping publishers stage official tournaments. Here's their official statement:

Titan Gaming has acquired Xfire. Titan will be taking on the Xfire name, with a focus towards ongoing innovation in the gaming space. The Xfire services will continue uninterrupted for its users. Xfire redefined how gamers communicate, Titan intends to build upon this tradition and utilize the Xfire platform to help gaming companies better engage their users. We look forward to continuing and expanding upon the Xfire service.

The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

ORIGINAL STORY:

It appears that the popular freeware messaging service Xfire is under new ownership. In a message posted on the front page, the development team announced that the company has been sold, and that the majority of the team is leaving.

The message written by one member of the development team reads, "Xfire has been purchased by another company. Most of the team that has brought you Xfire for the last 6 years is leaving, including me. We've enjoyed our time and I personally am sad that I was only able to do 127 releases. Good bye and game on!"

Xfire was founded in 2002 by former pro gamer Dennis "Thresh" Fong, who has since gone on to create Raptr. The company was acquired by Viacom in 2006 for 102 million dollars, and currently boasts 16 million registered users.
